How to Volunteer: 
To volunteer with an American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) region, you must register online through your local region’s Sports Connect portal, pass a criminal background check, and complete required safety courses. 

Follow these steps to complete your volunteer registration and certification process: 

1. Create an Account and Submit an Application 

• Register as a volunteer: Click Register Now on region homepage (www.ayso128.org) or log into your account on that region’s portal. Select the option to add a volunteer role. You can do this while signing up your child or independently.
• Choose a role: Select the division and position you want. Popular choices include Head Coach, Assistant Coach, Referee, Team Parent, Field Marshall, or Regional Board Member.
• Submit the application: Fill out your legal name and personal information accurately, then e-sign and submit the digital form. 

• If you register as an assistant coach:

  1. Email us the Head Coach you desire to be placed with, if applicable 
  2. Assistant coaches are required to complete all training prior to be assigned to team.

2. Complete Background Screening 

• Sterling Volunteers check: After submitting your application, check your email for a secure link from AYSO's background check partner, Sterling Volunteers. Complete this step to authorize your annual background check.

3. Take Mandatory Safety Courses 

All AYSO volunteers must log into AYSOU (accessed directly via the "Volunteer" dashboard tab on your local region portal) to complete mandatory safety modules: 

• AYSO Safe Haven: A core course focusing on child protection, safety, and volunteer protocols.
• Concussion Awareness: Training on identifying and responding to head injuries on the field.
• Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA): Online safety course covering symptoms and emergency actions for cardiac incidents.
• SafeSport Certification: A federally mandated training course focused on abuse prevention, which can be initiated through your AYSOU account. This training is three hours long but you may start, stop and go back to finish. 

4.  Attend Role-Specific Training

If you signed up to coach or referee, you must complete free, specialized clinics before stepping on the field:

• Coaches: Must complete an age-specific coaching course (e.g., 6U, 10U, or 12U coaching) either online or through a local in-person clinic. If you need the In-Person Coach training for U10 or U12, you may take that at Ball Camp on the days provided on the region calendar. 
• Referees: Must complete the Regional Referee course, which consists of online modules and a quick, in-person companion field session.

Certifications are valid indefinitely, except for Background Check and SafeSport, which must be renewed annually. Volunteers assigned as head coaches will be permitted to have their players participate at no cost, apart from the AYSO National Fee.
