Age-specific Coaching Guides

Welcome to the age-specific coaching guides!

US Youth Soccer has developed a player-centered curriculum for youth soccer clubs.  Key to that is the Player Development Model.

On the pages below you will find age-specific guidance from that model.  These are not cookie-cutter training sessions.  Instead, they discuss the components of the game for each age group.  These include what the season-long focus should be on, in the areas of fitness, techniques, psychology, and tactics.  Recommendations are also provided for typical training sessions.  These are general guidelines that should be used to build each training session.

There are a number of advantages of all coaches using the player development model.  For the player, it assures them of development that is appropriate for their age.  They can be challenged to learn skills and tactics that are appropriate for their age (not stuck with activities that are too easy or too hard).  For coaches, the benefits are two-fold.  First, there is specific guidance on what you should be teaching your team.  You can judge your success by how well you team masters these skills.  Second, you can expect that players you get at the beginning of each year will be familiar with and hopefully have mastered the specific skills described for previous years.  This will provide a solid base on which to continue building.
