Clarification
A quick
note on soccer shoes from Jack Graham,
Region 128 Referee Administrator:
This last Saturday we had a question
come up about soccer shoes and what is
acceptable. FIFA and the shoe
manufacturers have made many changes in
soccer shoes over the last few years -
and made our job as referees more
difficult in some ways - If the shoe is
made for soccer it is probably
acceptable (either an indoor or an
outdoor shoe)
A
quick summary - Just about any shoe with
some sort of traction and good
protection of the foot is an acceptable
soccer shoe. If the shoe is safe
to play in and is safe for the other
players on the field, it should be
allowed. What to watch out for is long
and very narrow or sharp cleats usually
at the toe that will cut or injure
another player if they slide into them.
Rounded or gentle ridges or nubs that
will not cut may be allowed, even if
they could conceivably bruise without
penetrating the skin.
Whether the cleat is hard plastic,
nylon, or has a metal end piece is not
the question. The question to ask is:
Will it slash or penetrate with a sharp
point or narrow ridge? In which case the
answer is - NO. Or is it a blunt object
that may bruise but will not cause a
penetration injury? In which case in
general the answer will be - YES.

Sandals - NO - not safe for
the person wearing them inadequate
support and protection

Golf Shoes, Track Shoes - NO
- not safe pointed spikes that will
penetrate and cause puncture wounds.

Dress shoes - discouraged
highly - too smooth on the bottom
and slippery risk to player wearing
them and the other players from loss
of traction and sliding out of
control.

Cross country running shoes,
Tennis shoes, Keds, etc. - YES.
Parents,
coaches and referees need to keep this
clarification in mind and work together
to ensure that the players are safe
while out on the pitch. This
information will stay here for a few
weeks, then posted as an FAQ in the
Parents
section if you need to refer back. If

from parents and coaches, AYSO Region 128 soccer
jerseys will be on sale for $18.00 each
at the Concord Park soccer field (on
Northshore Drive across from the golf
course) on
the next two Wednesday nights, Sept 10 &
17 from 6pm to 7pm.
- Directions from
Pellissippi Pkwy: Take exit #5 onto
Northshore DR going west (toward
Farragut) for approximately 3.5 miles
(past Eagle Glenn Dr.) to Concord Park
Dr. Parking for the soccer field
will be on the left. If you get to
the boat launch area you've gone too
far.
- Directions from Farragut: Take
Concord Rd south to Northshore DR. Turn
left (east) using the roundabout and
travel about a mile just past the boat
launch area. Parking for the soccer
field will be on the right.

Late Registration Date
Scheduled - Saturday 8/16/2008 from 9am
to Noon.
We've had a lot of
requests for a late registration date
and while we can't guarantee a spot with
a team, Region 128 will hold a Late
Registration on Saturday 8/16/2008 from
9am to 12pm (noon). This
registration will be to fill a few
open
slots on each team and establish a waiting list.
Please see the
registration information for more
details.
We'll do everything we
can to find spots for players but we
will be limited to the number of teams
that have coach and referee volunteer
support. We provide training for
both coaches and referees so don't be
concerned that you aren't an expert
soccer player, coach or official.
We would welcome anyone willing to step
up and volunteer to support your kids
and the rest of the the rest of the AYSO
team.
Remember... the kids
don't get to play "the beautiful game"
without YOU !!!

Registration Raffle
Winner
For our
Fall 2008 registration, the Soccer Post
provided a soccer package to raffle off
and raise money for the Eddie Neely
Children's Memorial Fund. The package
included cleats, shin guards, ball and
drawstring bag. Total raised for this
very worthy cause was about $200 and on
Monday, August 4th, the winner was Jim
Serafin whose daughter, Alina, plays in
U8 Girls. Congratulations Alina!!!

It is with great sadness,
we have to let everyone know that our
AYSO128 Regional Commissioner, Eddie
Neely passed away this morning at
St. Mary's Hospital in Knoxville.
He was hospitalized this past Wednesday
and complications led to his passing
this Sunday.
The family will receive
friends 5 to 6:45 pm Tuesday with
funeral services to follow at 7 p. m. in
the
Click Funeral Home Farragut Chapel
located at 11915 Kingston Pike. Family
and friends will meet at 11 a.m.
Wednesday at Oak Ridge Memorial Park for
graveside services and interment. In
lieu of flowers, a trust is being
established for his children. We'll
share details as we get them on how to
contribute. Please
keep Eddie's wife Pam, and his children,
Mira and Matt, as well as the rest of
the family in your thoughts and prayers.
Until a new Regional
Commissioner is identified, please refer
any AYSO questions to the appropriate
board member.
